Have a Safe and Wonderful Holiday!!
My wish is that all of you would have a warm and special holiday. I will be anxious to see all of the kids on January 3 and I can't wait to hear about all of the things that you have done! Please read with your child at every chance you can get and talk about number concepts as much as possible. Limit the tv/video time to 10 minutes per year of your child's age per day. Instead, sit down and snuggle with your child over a good book or play a game. There's no time such as this that you will be surrounded by your child at this age ever again!! Soak in the time with your beautiful child! Lots of love.....
Homework continued.....
Since this week will be full of excitement as we approach our winter break, I am asking that you help the kids extend the homework from last week. Change the numbers around and take notes on how your child is doing and what kind of mistakes he/she is making. They are getting the idea of so many mathematical concepts and thinking strategies! Help them to go over how they get their answers and correct them as you go. Thank you!
GREAT JOB! The North Pole Musical!!
Thank you to all of you who were able to come and see the kids do an amazing job for the North Pole Musical last Thursday night. The kids did such a good job and I am so thrilled that they were able to memorize ALL of the words to the songs. They were wonderful and I couldn't be more proud and I know you feel the same. Way to go, first grade!!!!

Homework Dec. 5 - 8
Spellingcity.com: There will be two lists beginning this week. One is more advanced and one is a first grade list. I want the kids doing the more advanced list to do both lists, please. The second list has more complicated words that they use in their writing on a regular basis and will help them in their writing. Please select list one or both lists with your child.
Please go to spellingcity.com to practice the words:
username: scarey1 password: mollyd
List one: there, saw, they, said, as, with, at Bonus: share, present
List two: present, gifts, grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt, cousins, sister, brother
TAKE HOME BOOK BAGS: Please read from the books sent home everyday! Also practice the sight words in the small bag on a daily basis as well. We are on a quest to make fluent readers in first grade and this homework is crucial to developing smooth readers. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful care in making sure this happens.
MATH: In continuing with our math vocabulary, we will be using the same concepts as last week. Write out a number line for the kids to use as a helpful tool from 1-20.
How much more is 16 than 8? 18 than 9? 21 than 11? 10 than 5?
How many fewer is 6 than 11? 5 than 12? 13 than 15?
What is the difference between 20 and 10? 15 and 20? 14 and 13?
Count forward starting at: 26, 43, 69 and end after about 5 numbers.
Count backward starting at: 39, 30, 40 and end after about 5 numbers.
How many groups of 10 are in 50? 32? 16?
How many ones are in 18? 7? 29?
Continue making mental math a part of everyday!!

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM- DECEMBER 8
This Thursday we will be having our school holiday music program, "Christmas at the North Pole".
The children will be performing at 7:00 pm. They have been preparing on a daily basis and it is going to be wonderful!
The dress code is holiday nice attire. Please have your child dressed and in our classroom no earlier than 6:45 pm. I will be there to monitor the kids until the program begins. Hang up coats on the hooks in the hall so that you can locate them after the concert. After the kids perform you are welcome to come to the classroom and collect your child to have him/her sit with you (on laps to save seating space) for the remaining portion of the concert performed by the 3-5th grade students. After the concert is over, please collect the coats from the hooks and drive safely home. This is sure to be a special night!

Miss Cram's last week
This will be Miss Cram's last week with us. Please help us wish her well in her new adventure as we say goodbye on Thursday, December 1st at 2:15 pm. Homemade cards are a great way to show your love and support to Miss Cram. Thank you!
Math concepts/vocabulary to use with your child
This week and over the next several weeks we will continue to use vocabulary that you can use at home with your child while in the car, store or during dinner.
How much more is 14 than 7? How much more is 9 than 5?
How much change would I get back if I bought something for 8 cents and I gave you a dime?
What is the difference between 11 and 5?
Other activities you can do with your child:
Count forward starting at 30.
Count backward starting 23.
Count by 10's and start at 34.
Count backward by 10's starting at 130.
What's one more than 28?
What's one less than 49?
How many groups of 10's are in 68?
How many ones are in 68?
Use numbers that are at your child's level. For example, begin with numbers less than 20 and go beyond if your child has an easy time. This is excellent mental math work and will help your child gain a good 'sense of number'.

Homework Folders
Each day, I am going to have the kids put their homework in their homework folders that will go home each day. It was brought to my attention that this would greatly help the communication between school and home and I do appreciate that clarification.
Reminder: Be looking for the homework folder in backpacks to come home on Monday's and please return homework on Thursdays.

Reports: A HUGE Success!
I am so thrilled with the Perrydale first graders!! Their reports were comprehensive, clear and all the children did a thorough job presenting his/her endangered animal. Everyone answered questions that were asked and each one seemingly became "experts" on each animal. Thank you to all the parents for doing such an amazing job preparing your child. The practice and yes the pain that you went through at home paid off during the presentations. Each child stood a bit taller and more confident after his/her presentation and future reports will be less of an effort. I am so proud of the children. Talking in front of a group of people is a skill that is so important! GREAT JOB ROOM 7!!
Those of you who still wish to have your child receive a grade for the next report card period, please go ahead and do the report and I will make time for your child to present.

Conferences
As you prepare for Monday's conferences, please come with questions about the report card as well as other questions you may have for me. I will have a tight schedule and as much as I would love to spend hours with each one of you, the demands of the schedule will only allow me a short visit with you. If you need additional time with me, we can schedule time this week or after Thanksgiving. Your child is very important and valuable to me. Oh yes......Happy Thanksgiving dear families!!

SUBTRACTION
We are diving deep into subtraction using a lot of mental math. Words to stress when you are working with your child on paperless, mental math are: "How many fewer.., How much less, What would happen if this many were missing?" Please get used to talking with your child in that manner at home. Subtraction is a mental shift from addition and it feels like some first graders need to spin their heads around to think differently than adding numerals together. Here are some examples:
Two more than ______ is 10 ______ - 4 = 6 Five less than eleven is ? What is one less than 40?
What numeral is five less than 35? How much money is left when a dime is taken from 17 cents?
I know that this is a lot different than we were used to learning math. Once their brains are used to thinking in these types of methods, math makes sense and the future Standardized Tests will be much more attainable. If you don't know already, the scores that the kids need to attain beginning in 3rd grade are much higher than a few years ago. We're starting earlier to get YOUR child ready!! This is all about training your child's brain to picture concepts in his/her head! This isn't going to happen in a week's time. It will take many weeks and perhaps all year! Together we will make great strides!

ITS REPORT TIME
Last Thursday I sent home your child's report assignment to be done at home. Please find and look over the sheet since there is only 10-12 days to complete the report. If you need additional help from me, please see me and I will personally help purchase supplies that you may need. Also, your child reads his/her writing to the class on a daily basis and is used to being in front of the group. This is different in the eyes of the students. They are more nervous and may stumble. Please, please help your child be successful in his/her presentation by STARTING NOW AND praciticing at home!! This means more than once! It means to do so several times in front of the family and have perhaps in front of a mirror. Call or email me with questions.
I will be grading their reports and this is part of the report card for the next nine weeks so I do take it seriously. Thank you ahead of time for your attention and support to this assignment. This report is probably the toughest due to it being the first one. Later reports will be much easier and believe it or not the kids will be asking to do more. They like it and I feel it builds a tremendous amount of confidence.

First Grade Has The BEST Parents!!
Even though it seems like it's been weeks since the Halloween party, I want everyone to know how much fun the kids had. Mrs. McIntosh orchestrated a wonderful party and the kids absolutely had a BLAST! Many thanks to all of you who came and helped make it an amazing time: Mrs. McIntosh, Mr. Abraham, Mrs. Kellum, Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Vidrio, Mrs. Scharf. My hat it off to all of you AND to the parents who sent things for the children: Mrs. Oak and Mrs. Lavoie. These are very lucky kids to have such great parents who support them the way you do. Thank you, thank you!!
I am hoping I didn't forget anyone. If I did, please let me know!!

Homework Oct. 31 - Nov. 3
Due to the busy and tiring week for your child, I will be giving a bit less homework. Please keep in mind that all homework is due on Thursday. Please check that both sides are completed entirely. Thank you.
There will be a grammar page sent home. Please make sure that the capital letters are TRUE capital letters. There should only be one in the sentence unless proper nouns are in the sentence. Your child is working hard on remembering to use capital letters at the beginning of every sentence and use punctuation and spacing. Their writing is improving DAILY! I'm so proud of them and how much they try and write about fun and interesting things. I have such an amazing class!!
Another homework page will be reviewing contractions as well as creating action words by adding 'ing'. We talk at school about "The King of ing" at the ending of words. Help your child by listening for the ing sound. Contractions this week will be contracting with the word, not. Please help your child add the eyelash (apostrophe) in the appropriate place. Discuss with your child what letters are squished out where the apostrophe is placed.

Testing Week/ Assessment Day on Friday
This week I will be having a substitute (wonderful Mrs. Johnson) on Tuesday and begin assessing the kids in math and reading. Also on Friday I will be putting together report cards and am beginning to think ahead to Parent/Teacher Conferences coming up in a few weeks. If any of you will be planning a trip during the week of Thanksgiving, please plan to schedule conferences ahead of time. This meeting time is very important for both of us to talk about how well your child is doing at school. Thank you so much!
Happy Halloween
Due to all of the excitement of the week, we are encouraging kids to limit the amount of candy sent to school. A piece or two is fine and expected but fist fulls as you can imagine, would cause all of us to turn incredibly zippy, then cranky and later need naps. I know the urge to get rid of the candy is alive and real but I would sure appreciate you being aware of how little leaves the house. Thank you so much for your attention and consideration.

Homework October 10 - 13
This is a busy week at Perrydale with homecoming week so homework will include reading every night. Please read the readers that are sent home on Monday all week to where they come out very easy. It is only when a child is very familiar with the words that expression and fluency can happen smoothly. The goal is practicing what good readers do: READ LIKE WE TALK. Also practice the sight words sent home where they are easily recognized. PLEASE RETURN THE READERS ON THURSDAY!!
Continue practicing coin names, values and small combinations of coins. The high school helpers that come in our room will be working with the children over the next several weeks. Help your child at home by giving them change and seeing what they can buy for a $1.00. Do this several times with different items.
A spelling sheet will be sent home on Monday and on Tuesday. Please practice the spelling words for the test on Thursday.
A reading homework page or two will be coming home one day this week. Please go over the details with your child and return them completed on Thursday.

Science
We're continuing our scientific process by first observing, then classifying, putting things in order, investigating and lastly, drawing conclusions based on what we found. The kids are naturals at this process and making note of the it makes the sequence of events real and deliberate.
Bats And More Bats!
We are going to study one of my favorite mammals: Bats! We will be writing about bats, doing math problems with bats and learning as much as we can about bats! Kids love learning about these fascinating animals. Ask your child about it this week.
Art Study
This week we are fortunate to have an artist teach us about Art History and Museums. We will be going to the art room and participating from 12:30 to 1:30 each day this week. Perrydale is a great place to learn!

Homework October 3-6
Remember: Pick one homework section to do every night. Spelling should be done every night for a short period of time and ALWAYS spend some snuggle time reading together! Use the bookmark that was sent home at Open House to key into what to do when there is a word you need to figure out. Choose some of the strategies on the bookmark to model with your child.
MATH HOMEWORK: Think of number stories that are to ten. Words to continue using this week are: How many more will it take to make ten?
How many fewer is six to ten?
What is three doubled? How many is six doubled?
How many are left when three eggs are taken from a full carton of eggs?
If four and six are ten, then how many is six and four more?
Use pennies or other trinkets to show the kids these mathematical concepts
Name coins and know their values. There are still students who are unaware of the coin names and their values despite us going over them often in class. We will be tested on these this week so please help your child know the coin value and names of all the coins.
SCIENCE HOMEWORK: We will be introducing the scientific process of:
1. Observe
2. Classify

Poor Sick Kids
Wow! Last Thursday our class shrunk by eight students absent with the stomach flu. Be assured that the desks, pencils and anything I could see needed wiping with an antibacterial wipe. was thoroughly cleaned. I missed the students who were gone and hope that the weekend brings health and wellness. Keep washing those hands! I'm looking forward to seeing all of our class family back on Monday.

READING BAGS
Last week I began sending home books for your child to read at home. Thank you for returning them the next day. I will be adding vocabulary cards (sight words) to the bags this week. Please have your child read the words and become familiar with them. Some they will just have to memorize and your extra help at home will solidify the words in his/her brain. Please send back the cards and books each day. I will be asking your child to read the words on three different occassions so if you see them reappear, please know that this is extra practice.
Homework September 26 - 29
Please bring in 1 -3 different apples (see apple note).
Write a grocery list for your favorite apple recipe. Examples might be apple muffins, apple pie, apple cake.

Weigh two paper bags of apples (or whatever you have on hand) and help your child figure out the difference between the two.
Talk about terms such as, "How much less is this bag than that bag?", "How many fewer apples are in this bag?", "How many apples would you predict it would take to make 5 pounds?" Have fun and make up your own questions.

Homework September 12 - 15
Bug Hunt: Make a list of bugs that you find outside. If you can write a sentence about each bug.
Coins: Please practice naming each coin and its value. We are beginning to talk about money and each table group is named a certain coin. Ask your child what coin is above his/her table.
Numeral Writing: Practice writing your numbers to 30 clearly and trying to do so without any reversals.
If a student is really capable in this exercise, have them write them backwards (from 30 to 0). Keep in mind that when writing a zero, start at the top of the oval and draw around counter clockwise completing the oval. When writing the numberal eight, start by making a "S" and connecting the last line back up to the top.
WRITE IT DOWN! If you went somewhere for the weekend, jot down the fun things you did as a family. If you are planning on some fun times ahead, write them down and your child will likely have great things to write about at school.
Dinner Time Conversation: Dinner time is such a special time for families to gather and share their day together. As students get involved with sports and after school activities, it seems to get more challenging everyday to keep that dinner time protected. Do your best and try to keep the t.v. off during the dinner hour. Stimulate the conversation by talking about the best, worst and funniest things that happened that day. You will be surprised what will come out. Write down the special ones and your child will likely write "just like you did" the important parts of life during our writing time at school.

What a Great Two Days!
I am so delighted to by your child's teacher this year. I couldn't be more happy to be learning with your child. We have learned about many things in just two days. Some may be a review for certain children but yet it solidifies concepts when they are repeated and practiced.
We have been learning about ways to stay safe at home and at school. We will learn next week about ways to be respectful and responsible students at Perrydale. Be prepared to ask your child about these topics next week.

Welcome Back To School
Please let me know if you do not have internet access and I will be happy to make a copy of the blog for your child on a weekly basis.
I am so excited to be here with your child!! We are going to learn so much together. I can't wait to dive in with your child as he/she brings his/her learning perspective to our first grade class. We are going to have a great year!
I will be posting on this blog every week or so. Spelling homework on spellingcity.com will be updated weekly. Please check homework options and turn them in on Thursdays of each week. You may comment on the blog or send me an email to communicate with me if that works for you, or you can always give me a call here at school and I will get back to you promptly. Please check homework options and turn them in on Thursdays of each week. The homework will change slightly but there will always be plenty of options so that your child may choose the homework of the day. Remember reading every night is not optional. Each child gets to read alone or snuggled up beside you for 20 minutes each day!
I will also post things I will be needing for an upcoming project as well as reminders. For example if we are running low on tissue in the room, I will post it on the blog.
Thank you and here's to great communication!!
